Teresa Milbrodt is the author of two short story collections, Bearded Women: Stories (Chizine Publications) and Work Opportunities: Stories (Portage Press); a novel, The Patron Saint of Unattractive People (Boxfire Press); and a flash fiction collection, Larissa Takes Flight: Stories (Booth Books). Her stories, essays, and poems have been published widely in literary magazines (including Guernica). She is addicted to coffee, long walks with her MP3 player, frozen yogurt, and anything by George Saunders.

Sometimes I was being chased by furies—monsters with the heads of women and bodies of huge black birds—and the castle was my refuge. Other times I wandered its halls looking for my husband, poking my head in each room and noting the tapestries and gold-framed oil paintings.

The little people eat on the couch while Berchta and I eat at the kitchen table, and she relaxes enough to grouse about how no one appreciates the old gods and goddesses anymore. I assume this is a typical complaint among mythical figures.
