Mariana Martínez Esténs, who graduated from Columbia Journalism School (Honors ’06), has twenty-one years’ experience covering the Tijuana-San Diego border region. She has been working as a creative producer for Apple since 2019. She contributed to the long-form podcast site Así Como Suena, winning second place in the National Award Against Discrimination from CONAPRED in 2017 for “Haitians in Tijuana.” She is the author of the NPR Radio Ambulante episode “No Safe Place.” She worked as a field producer for The Dividing Line (Dateline NBC) and other documentaries, including Vice’s i-D London and Netflix’s Dope series. She also worked as a field producer for BuzzFeed and NBC (migrant caravan coverage), as well as for nature documentaries for Discovery Science, BBC Nature, Nat Geo, and Al Jazeera.
